Medical Cannabis Dosage: Dosing & Administration Guidelines

If you want to learn about consuming cannabis, you’ve come to the right place. Understanding medical cannabis dosage requirements is challenging because many factors impact how people respond to THC and CBD compounds. You may not feel anything from a dosage that substantially affects someone else.

At LeafMed, a medical marijuana dispensary in Mississippi, we want to help people learn about all the benefits of medical cannabis. Below, we discuss everything you need to know about medical cannabis dosage requirements.

Medical Cannabis Dosage Recommendations

Medical cards do not include specific dosage instructions as prescriptions do. Instead, Mississippi enacts purchase maximums, preventing patients from receiving more than the allotted amount of cannabis per day, week, or month. Because of these looser rules, understanding how much you should take at once can feel challenging.

Below, we discuss common dosage recommendations from medical professionals, protocols for increasing dosages, and the factors impacting how your body responds to dosage strengths.

General Dosage Recommendations

General dosage recommendations depend on the type of CBD or THC you consume. Medical cannabis products may include primarily CBD, THC, or a blend of each, resulting in varying effects. The recommendations are as follows:

  • High CBD to THC formulas (approximately 20:1): Patients over 110 pounds can typically begin with 25 mg of CBD twice daily, increasing every one to two weeks by 25 mg as needed to a maximum of 600 mg daily.
  • Hybrid THC and CBD formulas (3:1): Patients over 110 pounds can begin with approximately 2.5 to 5 mg of THC once a day, increasing every week or two by 2.5 mg as needed.
  • Equal 1:1 formulas: With equal formulas, patients can follow the THC guidelines mentioned above, following the 2.5 mg of THC daily starting dose.

Note that anyone under 110 pounds will likely need a smaller medical cannabis dosage.

Administration Protocols

The Delphi process is a medical cannabis consensus covering three administration protocols for patients experiencing various types of pain. The protocol covers how patients should gradually increase their doses, introducing more THC over time until reaching the desired effects. The three main administration options include the following:

  • Routine: The most commonly recommended option involves beginning with CBD-dominant strains at 5 mg twice daily, increasing by 10 mg every few days with a maximum dosage of 40 mg. If patients do not achieve desired results at the maximum dosage, they may begin with 2.5 mg of THC daily, increasing by 2.5 mg every few days until reaching a maximum of 40 mg.
  • Conservative: The conservative protocol follows the same method as above, though it introduces CBD and THC at slower and smaller rates. Conservative methods may work better for lighter-weight or more sensitive individuals.
  • Rapid: The rapid protocol begins with THC content and CBD concentrates, increasing both dosages simultaneously. Patients with severe symptoms requiring more immediate relief may prefer the rapid protocol.

Factors Impacting Dosage Effects

A few different factors impact how your body will respond to different dosages. The type of strain you use (Indica, Sativa, or hybrid), the delivery method, and your metabolism will determine how you begin feeling the effects. Review the variations of common delivery methods below:

  • Oral: When you consume cannabis edibles, tinctures, capsules, or other oral products, your body absorbs the substance slowly, creating more prolonged effects. Many beginners prefer the gradual edible experience.
  • Inhalation: Vaping or smoking medical cannabis allows your lungs to absorb the compounds nearly instantly, offering immediate but short-lived relief. You may notice a temporary increase in your heart rate with the pain-relieving effects.
  • Topical: Topical products offer acute relief without full-body effects, taking around an hour to begin working.
